HISTORY

The 1950's and 1960's

In 1956, Achievement Tec began as a staff of psychologists. A variety of organizations, including Levitz Furniture, Methodist Hospital, Southland Corporation, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Zales, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, Motorola, Ebby Halliday, The Texas Turnpike Authority and many others sent applicants being considered for managerial or sales level jobs to be tested by the companyís psychologists who dictated reports and returned them to the organization. Usual assessment fees were $250.00 per person. These assessments were time-consuming and expensive for clients. A faster, less costly, more accurate method of serving clients was needed.

A team of psychologists constructed and validated the Achiever encompassing six mental aptitudes and ten personality dimensions. Dr. Raymond Cattell, who originated the 16PF® of IPAT, was a critical participant in the creation of the Achiever initial instrument, along with Dr. James Moore of Purdue University, Mr. Roger Prior, Dr. John Shirley and others. The original Achiever was construct validated against such leading instruments as the University of California Intelligence Test, the Stanford Binet, the 16PF®, and the MMPI. The results of this construct validation were published in the original Achiever Reliability and Validity Manual. Immediately, the corporate staff began using the Achiever to evaluate job candidates, alongside other leading tests, in order to validate and verify the accuracy of its results. Further reliability and validity manuals were published in 1976 and 1992.

The 1970's

In the early 1970's, Milton S. Cotter, a leading national management consultant, joined the firm and immediately began restructuring the Achiever program for internal use within nationwide corporations such as Tandy Corporation, E. F. Hutton, Radio Shack, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Arby's, American Multi-Cinemas (AMC), Bell Helicopter, and many others. At this stage, inhouse corporate departments were set up with technical training provided by Achievement Tec for individuals within the client company. This training was equivalent to nine to twelve hours of college course work and enabled the individuals to interpret the results of the Achiever.

The 1980's

In the early 1980's, the Achiever system was programmed for specially built "superbrain" computers by Intertech. The 1980's also saw a larger client base with concurrent validation studies conducted to derive hiring patterns on successful people. By the end of the 1980's over 2,000 benchmarked jobs had been established for use in selecting successful people.

The 1990's

The 1990's brought wide acceptance of IBM PC's and compatible equipment. Under the direction of Mr. Wes Stewart, Vice President of Technical Development, the Achiever, Scoreboard and Performer product line was developed at a cost of over $3.1 million dollars.
